Introduction to Kolrosing

Kolrosing is a craft of the people. Truly accessible, all you need is a wooden surface, a knife to incise lines, a pigmented powder like cinnamon or coffee to fill the lines, a bit of oil, a hard smooth object for burnishing cuts closed, and your own hands and eyes. The materials and basics are simple once you get the hang of them, yet the possibilities are endless – from simple symbols and letters to intricate patterns and illustrations. 

In this introductory class, you will learn this ancient form of surface decoration through discussion, demos, practice of techniques, and feedback. This class will practice basic kolrosing techniques on popsicle sticks, exploring mark making techniques and building control. Learn the foundations of kolrosing, and leave with confidence to continue practicing and experimenting on your own.

 

About the Instructor: Jules Luna Dungca

 

Instructor will provide the following: 

• Class set of kolrosing knives for students to use, with knives available for purchase in class if students want to continue kolrosing on their own.
• cinnamon for pigment
• walnut oil
• burnishers
• popsicle sticks for practicing

 

Students are asked to bring:

• Optional: reading glasses or a magnifying visor for reading and seeing small details, if needed
• note-taking tools (if you’d like to take notes)
• We recommend dressing in layers, as certain classrooms can be drafty depending on the time of year.

Skill Level
No experience required.

 

Age Recommendation
Students ages 13 and older are welcome to attend this class. Ages 13-15 must register with another registered adult. Ages 16-17 can register with parent permission by an email to info@marinemillsfolkschool.org.
