Instructor Pat Kruse
Learn the art of birchbark basket making in this two-day, hands-on workshop with birchbark artist Pat Kruse. Students will learn to cut and shape bark pieces, master precise hand-sewing techniques, and construct a sturdy handle.
Pat teaches what he calls “the grandma and grandpa way,” a time-honored approach that ensures both a high-quality basket and the development of real, lasting skill. Along the way, students will gain insight into Ojibwe culture and the deep tradition behind birchbark artistry, including how bark is sustainably and respectfully harvested by hand.
No prior experience is needed; Pat will guide students through each step at a pace that builds confidence and skill. By the end of the class, each student will take home a finished, handmade birchbark berry basket, a lasting piece crafted with their own hands and rooted in traditional technique.
*Note: this is a 2-day class, taking place October 3 and 4, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm each day.
