Card weaving is an ancient, global craft that used to create strong, intricately patterned woven bands. This method of band weaving is portable and accessible– you don’t need a loom or expensive equipment to do it. All you need is yarn, a set of weaving cards, and clamps!
Dating back to the early Iron Age, card-woven bands were used for several purposes: to create the starting and selvedge bands for warp-weighted looms, to become the edge of handwoven blankets, and to decorate the hems and seams of garments. Modern uses may include purse straps, guitar straps, hat bands, and belts.
In this class, we will create bands approximately 3/8" to 3/4” wide and 24” to 48” long. Students will have a variety of beginner-friendly patterns to choose from. By the end of class, students will have the understanding, skills, and resources to continue band weaving with cards at home.
