Instructor Becky Utecht
Learn the art of Norwegian skinnfell from experienced fiber artist and shepherd Becky Utecht. Norwegian skinnfell entails stitching and wood block printing on tanned sheepskins. Traditionally used for an entire family's warm bedding on cold winter nights, skinnfell traps (blankets) were made from multiple hides that were carefully stitched together and then decorated with motifs meant to convey good wishes to the receiver.
In this class, you will cut and stitch two sheepskins into a small coverlet (about 30” x 44”) or a long chair covering/baby bag (approximately 22” x 60”). After cutting and stitching the skins together, you will decorate the skin with authentic Norwegian wood blocks, then learn how to apply a decorative edging. Participants will need hand strength to stitch through layers of sheepskin (a small jewelry pliers can help with this).
*Note: this is a 2-day class, taking place October 24 and 25, 9:30 am - 3:30 pm each day.
