Nordic Knitting: Spooky Cowls

Nordic Knitting + Black Cats and Beads for Eyes = A Little Bit Spooky! (Okay dog-lovers. We've got you covered. You can knit dogs if you'd rather.) This class will focus on knitting a Nordic knit cowl. You'll learn all the traditional stranded knitting skills: reading colorwork charts, managing two strands of yarn at once, and securing floats. But this class includes something extra: knitting with beads!

 

This light-hearted class is heavy on skills. In addition to the above techniques, you'll gain experience with a specialty bind-off and picking up stitches. Therefore, some experience with colorwork knitting is highly recommended.

 

Class size will be small allowing for plenty of individual attention. Questions are welcome; repetition is part of learning. Second chances abound. You may end up sharing a tip with the rest of us! Expect to be patient with yourself. Your brain will be busy as you learn both new techniques and fine motor skills.

 

Although your cozy cowl project will not be completed in class, you'll leave with a good start and all the skills needed to complete it at home.

About the Instructor: Lizabeth Towers

 

Instructor will provide the following: 

• Merino wool yarn

• beads

• printed handouts

 

Students are asked to bring:

• 16" circular knitting needles in US sizes 3 and 4 and a crochet hook size 11.

• 1 week before class, the instructor will send a link to the class pattern source. Students will purchase, download, and print the pattern, which costs approximately $6.24.

Skill Level 

Intermediate - students should be comfortable knitting, binding off, and should have completed several knitted projects. It's helpful if students have some experience with stranded colorwork, although it's not required.

 

Age Recommendation

Students ages 16 and older are welcome to attend this class. Students ages 16 and 17 may attend without a parent/guardian in attendance as long as MMFS is provided with written parental permission by email to info@marinemillsfolkschool.org.
