Drawing the Whisperings of the Forest

Drawing really is about listening, paying attention to what pulls us, and entering into a conversation with what and who we are drawing. With simple drawing materials, this class will explore the woods outside of the folk school and discover, in a new way, what surprises and awaits us. 

 

Anyone can draw! We first will practice ways of mark-making to relax and connect our eyes, minds, and hearts to the life before us. Our practice will include using different kinds of line, fast and slow drawing, searching for important shapes, and paying attention to light and shadow. We also will make simple and small field sketchbooks, so we are ready for a drawing adventure at any time! These simple sketchbooks can be kept as memories or given away as gifts.

 

About the Instructor: Laurie Richardson Johnson

 

Instructor will provide the following: 

• drawing pens 

• dark drawing pencils

• kneaded erasers

• papers for field sketchbooks

• thread

• drawing boards

 

Students are asked to bring:

• a foldable lawn chair (I have about 5 camp stools)

• sketchbook around 9" by 12" or so for practice

• additional favorite pens, graphite or colored pencils you might have

• dress in layers / for the weather (blankets optional)

 

Skill Level 

No experience required.

 

Age Recommendation 

Students ages 12 and older are welcome to attend this class. Ages 12-15 must register with another registered adult. Ages 16-17 can register with parent permission by an email to info@marinemillsfolkschool.org.
