A bookplate, or ex libris , is a decorative label placed inside a book to show ownership, often featuring a name, initials, coat of arms, or personal design. Originating in 15th-century Germany, bookplates became a popular way to mark personal libraries as books became more widely available, serving both as functional identifiers and collectible works of art.

In this class, participants will carve their own bookplate using a 4 x 5 inch carving block and linocut tools. We’ll explore how to incorporate text into block prints and develop a design that feels personal and meaningful. Students will print several bookplates in class using black ink on paper and will take their carved stamp home to continue printing on their own. All printmaking supplies will be provided.
