Spirals and Stars: Make a Braid-In Cotton Rag Rug - April 11 and 12, 2026

Create a beautiful rug using old clothes and discarded fabric. No sewing is required for this flexible and forgiving braided-in technique, which results in a durable and eye-catching rug. We will learn to make a round rug, then explore a range of design options and experiment with color and pattern, making each piece uniquely your own.

Note that this is a 2-day class, taking place Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12, 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM.

 

Your instructor will provide the following:

• Fabric for students to purchase in class

 

Students are asked to bring:

• Old woven cotton fabrics, about 2 bedsheets worth. Think old sheets and yardage of cotton and cotton blends, old men’s dress shirts, etc. Consider selecting fabrics in the categories of light, medium, and dark to create contrast and patterns, or bring whatever you have and experiment! Denim, knit fabric, or 100% linen fabric are not ideal for this method. If you have any questions please email info@marinemillsfolkschool.org.

Skill Level 

Beginner: no prior knowledge or skills required to participate

 

Age Requirement 

Students ages 16 and older are welcome to attend this class. Students ages 16 and 17 may attend without a parent/guardian in attendance as long as MMFS is provided with written parental permission by email to info@marinemillsfolkschool.org.
