Instructor  Laura Brown

Rug braiding is a simple, meditative way to create something for your home, and it connects us to past traditions of giving scrap of fabric a purpose. Colorful blanket-weight wool provides an opportunity to play with colors and patterns. Each student will make a small braided rug, either oval or circle (about 2’ x 3’), and will learn the techniques needed to continue braiding at home. Note: rugs are not braided in one day! Finishing techniques will be demonstrated in class, and a video tutorial will be provided for later reference, but students should expect to finish rugs at home.

Your instructor will provide the following:

  • Clamps
  • Cutting mat
  • Ruler
  • Rotary cutter
  • Scissors
  • Needles
  • Thread

Students are asked to bring:

  • Scissors for cutting fabric, and snips for cutting thread if you like
  • Tape measure
  • Straight pins
  • Blanket- or coat-weight wool if you like, the instructor will also provide it. Skirt- or suit-weight wool is a little too thin, and felted wool is too thick for braiding.

Since your class runs over the lunch hour, we recommend you bring a lunch or click here to learn about local eating opportunities.
