Chair caning is a fun and profitable heritage craft to learn, and in this class, we will be using wide binding cane, weaving a twill pattern on a prepared square, green-painted footstool. You will learn how to weave the easy twill or herringbone pattern, using the correct tension, learn the secret of invisible joins, and create a “pocket” around the seat rails, while weaving a slightly different pattern on the bottom from the top. This weaving method and pattern can be later transferred to any chair with seat rungs, with a couple of additional steps. Cathryn will share all her “chair caning tricks of the trade” with you in case you want to continue this weaving as a hobby, or continue this nearly lost art as a professional chair seat weaver!

Your instructor will provide the following:
Instructor will provide a step-by-step pattern, with a kit which includes: a prepared square painted footstool, and a coil of 500 ft. wide binding cane. Students will have class use of a caning needle and tension rods.
